Honor and Xiaomi are shifting some flagship phones away from Corning Gorilla Glass, using proprietary screen materials such as Honor NanoCrystal Shield and Xiaomi Shield Glass 2.0.
Honor said the move began after the industry lacked a suitable glass-ceramic option for curved-screen smartphones in 2021, pushing it to build its own technology for the Magic series and foldables.
Xiaomi said it still uses Gorilla Glass on some budget models, but chose its own glass on devices like the Xiaomi 15 Ultra to balance durability and performance.
Both brands said the switch is not mainly about cutting costs, though Honor noted its glass-ceramic is significantly more expensive than traditional strengthened glass like Gorilla Glass.
Corning remains widely used by Samsung, Google, Motorola and others, and there is still no objective testing showing these in-house alternatives outperform Gorilla Glass.
As phone makers create their own glass, is Corning’s dominance over smartphone screens finally cracking?
With dueling durability claims, how can consumers know which smartphone screen is actually the strongest?
