Kerry Sheron, 69, died Sunday night after spending days in critical condition from a May 20 beating outside his Escondido home, his wife told NBC 7.
Prosecutors said the attack was unprovoked: security video showed a man approach Sheron in his front yard, strike him in the jaw, then hit his head again after he fell.
Thomas Caleb Butler, 32, has been charged with attempted murder, elder abuse, criminal threats and battery; he pleaded not guilty Friday and is being held without bail.
Deputy District Attorney Ross Garcia said the charges could change after Sheron's death, and Butler faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted on the current counts.
Nearly 100 supporters gathered outside Sheron's Trump-themed home before and after his death, where prosecutors said the couple had previously faced harassment and threats over the displays.
