Masoud Pezeshkian used the May 24 anniversary of Iran’s 1982 recapture of Khorramshahr to cast today’s standoff as a fight over Iran, the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
His X post framed “resistance, self-sacrifice, and repelling aggression” as Iran’s default response, which analysts said signals Tehran is digging in against U.S. and Israeli pressure rather than preparing to concede.
Omar Mohammed of George Washington University said invoking Khorramshahr is one of the Islamic Republic’s strongest wartime references and, paired with the Hormuz mention, suggests an existential-war posture rather than a managed crisis.
The message landed as Donald Trump said a deal to end the war is “largely negotiated,” while Iran said broad agreement exists on some points but a final accord is still not imminent.
