Overview

In late May 2026, the Democratic Republic of the Congo faced its 17th Ebola outbreak, this time caused by the Bundibugyo species, which was first identified in Uganda in 2007 and is known to cause severe disease and death. The outbreak is happening in a fragile environment marked by insecurity, population displacement, and the rapid spread of rumors, making containment and response much harder. Community mistrust toward health facilities and humanitarian workers is widespread, further complicating efforts to control the disease.
