Leaked April 30 audio shows Mark Zuckerberg telling employees Meta’s AI models improve by “watching really smart people do things” inside the company, weeks before workers learned whether they would be cut.
Meta had announced on April 23 that it would eliminate 10% of its workforce—nearly 8,000 jobs—and close 6,000 open roles, while delaying individual notifications until May 20.
The remarks came during an all-hands discussion of “employee device tracking,” a practice that had already unsettled staff and that Zuckerberg said Meta should have communicated better.
On May 20, the layoffs went ahead and about 7,000 more employees were reassigned to AI initiatives, underscoring how aggressively Meta is shifting resources toward AI.
