About 35 overpasses between Richmond and Woodstock filled with firefighters, civilians and giant American flags as Army Captain Andy King’s body was driven home three days after his Nov. 2, 2023 death.
King, 27, was killed in a Humvee accident during an Army Reserve training exercise in Virginia, leaving behind his wife Amy and their 17-month-old daughter, Adalyn.
A friend who was a volunteer firefighter helped organize the route-wide tribute, while police agencies handed off escorts along the highways and briefly shut interstate access for the procession.
For the final 35 miles, farmers who knew King through his agriculture work lined Route 81 with tractors and other equipment, extending a trip that normally took 2.5 hours to about four hours.
Amy King said the turnout showed Americans did not distinguish between combat and training deaths, framing the spontaneous salute as the essence of Memorial Day.
