Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has declined to mention Saikat Chakrabarti as he runs in the June 2 primary for Nancy Pelosi’s open San Francisco House seat.
Chakrabarti has made his 2019 role as Ocasio-Cortez’s chief of staff central to his anti-establishment campaign, using her name in speeches, ads and voter outreach.
That strategy has been complicated by their strained history, underscored by a mobile billboard trailing him with the message “A.O.C. FIRED SAIKAT.”
The silence matters in the race’s final stretch because Ocasio-Cortez has recently endorsed other left-wing House candidates, while Chakrabarti appears locked in a tight fight for second place behind Scott Wiener and alongside Connie Chan.
