$1.8 billion in DOJ money was Van Hollen's sharpest target, with the Maryland Democrat urging Congress to scrap the anti-weaponization fund or at least bar Jan. 6 rioters, child molesters and lawmakers from receiving payouts.
He said Senate Republicans left town to avoid votes on those amendments and argued the fund remains under President Trump's control because he can shape and fire the commission overseeing it.
On Iran, Van Hollen said the emerging agreement amounts to "stop digging" after a war he called a blunder, warning prices and interest rates have risen while Tehran may retain more control over the Strait of Hormuz and gain access to frozen assets.
He also backed a judge's dismissal of human-smuggling charges against Kilmar Abrego Garcia as vindictive, while calling the DNC's 2024 election autopsy shoddy but opposing a leadership change six months before a key election.
