Japan AI Rally Pushes More Retail Orders Into Dark Pools as Nikkei Swings Past 63,000

Japan’s AI-driven stock boom is increasingly sending retail orders through broker systems and dark pools, shifting activity away from the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s visible order book and raising transparency concerns.
JPX research says online brokers’ smart order routing has lifted the share of retail trades executed in dark pools, a trend regulators have tracked more closely since post-2020 reforms added flags for some off-exchange transactions.
The appeal is better execution: brokers can find price improvement away from lit markets, especially in fast-moving AI names such as SoftBank, Tokyo Electron, Advantest and Fujikura.
The tradeoff is weaker price discovery, because more matching happens out of public view; in a crowded theme, that can leave brokers and market makers with a clearer picture of demand than ordinary investors.
The shift comes as the Nikkei 225 hit 63,799.32 intraday on May 14, fell to 59,558.06 on May 20 and closed at a record 63,339.07 on May 22, underscoring how market plumbing could matter beyond the rally itself.
With so much AI stock trading happening off-exchange, can we still trust the public Nikkei price?
As Japan’s AI boom moves trading into the shadows, are brokers gaining an unfair edge over investors?
Japan’s 2026 Equity Boom: Nikkei 225’s AI Rally, Dark Pool Growth, and Retail Investor Outflows
Overview
Japan's Nikkei 225 Index surged to historic highs by May 2026, driven by ongoing corporate governance reforms, strong exposure to the booming AI semiconductor industry, and the positive effects of the yen carry trade and a weaker yen. This rally was further fueled by global excitement around Artificial Intelligence, with strong performances from AI-related U.S. shares and positive tech earnings boosting sentiment. Investors are now questioning the sustainability of this momentum, as the market's strength relies on both domestic reforms and global AI trends, making it important to watch for shifts in currency, technology enthusiasm, and economic outlook.
