Ryan Hybl Leaves Oklahoma After 17 Years for Georgia Tech Golf Job

  • 17-year Oklahoma coach Ryan Hybl is leaving to become Georgia Tech’s fifth men’s golf head coach, but will stay on through next week’s NCAA Championship with the No. 16 Sooners.
  • 51 tournament titles, 15 straight NCAA Championship appearances and the 2017 national title made Hybl one of college golf’s most successful coaches before the move to Atlanta.
  • Hybl, 44, said the decision was driven largely by a return to Georgia, where he and his wife are from and where they want to be closer to family after 17 years away.
  • The move follows retirements at both programs: Bruce Heppler is stepping down at Georgia Tech, while Oklahoma named former Oklahoma State player Jonathan Moore as Hybl’s replacement.
  • The switch also closes off a potential return to Hybl’s alma mater Georgia, where retiring coach Chris Haack will be succeeded by assistant and former player Mookie DeMoss.
Can the new coach revive a legendary program living in the shadow of its iconic history?
After his alma mater snubbed him, is this return to Georgia a homecoming or a reckoning?
