$5,400 was wired to Mexico by Deborah Del Mastro after callers used an AI-cloned version of her 37-year-old daughter's voice to stage a fake kidnapping.
Five hours of threats and rapid-fire instructions kept Del Mastro from verifying the claim until she reached the promised release site, called her daughter, and learned she was actually at work.
Erin West of Operation Shamrock said scammers can clone a voice from just seconds of audio pulled from social media or phone calls, calling the trend a growing 'scamdemic.'
Martinez police are investigating, but Del Mastro said she does not expect to recover the money; officials urged families to use code words and treat urgent money demands as a red flag.
