Google Wallet Adds 13 Features Beyond Payments, Turning Android Phones Into IDs, Keys and Passes

Google Wallet is being framed as a broader digital hub, with 13 highlighted features that let Android users store and use boarding passes, transit cards, event tickets, loyalty cards, health passes and digital IDs.
Android 16 devices can surface live boarding-pass updates on the lock screen, while nearby-pass alerts and Gmail syncing can automatically pull up or add eligible tickets and passes when users need them.
NFC underpins many of the additions: supported phones can tap for transit even offline, unlock hotel rooms, act as student or employee badges, and in compatible cars serve as digital keys on models from brands including BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
Google also pitches Wallet as a family and security tool, letting parents manage children's payment cards through Family Link while keeping sensitive IDs and health records encrypted, authentication-protected and remotely erasable.
The broader push is to move Wallet beyond tap-to-pay into an everyday replacement for physical wallets, especially in travel, commuting and access scenarios where offline use and quick retrieval matter most.
