Thomas Massie said he would support a short-term Iran agreement after Donald Trump said a deal with Tehran had been “largely negotiated,” even though no terms had been released by Sunday.
Gas near $5 a gallon, diesel near $6 and soaring fertilizer costs drove Massie’s support, with the Kentucky Republican saying families and farmers were already absorbing the conflict’s economic pain.
Massie argued Republicans also risk political damage if they reject a deal, saying the party is alienating anti-war voters, fiscal conservatives and other parts of Trump’s coalition ahead of the midterms.
Fresh off losing his primary after seven House terms, Massie tied his defeat to outside spending and his independent record, saying he was punished for working across party lines and resisting leadership.
