Israel Plans Multi-Billion Defamation Suit Against New York Times Over Hamas War Report

Israel said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar will pursue a multi-billion-dollar defamation lawsuit against The New York Times over a report alleging rape and sexual abuse by IDF soldiers.
The planned case centers on claims that the article relied on false accusations and on the European Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor, whose head Rami Abdu was described as having documented ties to senior Hamas officials.
Israeli officials argue the report went beyond wartime criticism, portraying it as a modern blood libel that damaged Israel diplomatically, morally and in security terms while fueling antisemitism against Jews worldwide.
The move comes amid a broader Israeli push to challenge international coverage of the Gaza war, which officials say has increasingly replaced verification with politically driven narratives since the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks.
