Bill Dabney of Pasadena said he spotted four separate stools on his guest house roof, looked around and suddenly found a mountain lion staring at him nearby.
The cat appeared to be in a springing posture, Dabney told KABC-TV, prompting him to run from the area immediately.
Days later, another mountain lion was reported in the neighborhood, though it was unclear whether it was the same animal.
The encounter underscores continued mountain lion activity near homes in Pasadena, where residents can face close-range sightings with little warning.
