Days before Tuesday’s GOP runoff in Texas’ 35th District, veterans blasted a Lujan-aligned PAC mailer that called Trump-backed Carlos De La Cruz the “100% disabled” kickboxer.
The ad argued De La Cruz’s VA disability rating let him avoid property taxes, citing his former kickboxing gym and volunteer carpentry despite Texas law granting full homestead exemptions to veterans rated 100% disabled.
Air Force veteran Charlotte Neiner, a Wounded Warrior Project member, called the mailer “the most shameful thing” she had received and said attacking a fellow veteran’s wounds before Memorial Day was disgraceful.
John Lujan’s campaign did not respond for comment. Lujan led the first round with about 32% to De La Cruz’s 27%, and the two now meet in a runoff after neither cleared 50%.
The race is already highly charged: De La Cruz has Trump’s backing, Lujan is endorsed by Gov. Greg Abbott, and the district’s Democratic contest has drawn separate outrage over Maureen Galindo’s remarks.
