A portion of Sitka lost phone and internet service Friday, with Alaska Communications saying it was dealing with intermittent internet disruptions and working to restore service quickly.
The outage knocked out some residents' and businesses' connections and also affected non-emergency lines at the Sitka Police Department and Fire Hall, according to a city press release.
911 service remained operational and officials said it should still be used for emergencies while city staff worked on the problem.
GCI, the other major provider in Sitka, said it had received no outage reports from its customers, pointing to ACS as the source of the disruption.
Does this outage reveal a critical flaw in how federal funds are upgrading Alaska's infrastructure?
Why did one provider fail while its rival, with a new 'self-healing' network, remained online?
