Port Authority officials pushed LaGuardia’s runway reopening to at least 6 a.m. Saturday after more testing around a sinkhole found Wednesday near one of the airport’s two runways.
53% of arriving flights and 43% of departures were delayed Thursday, and at least 19 more delays were reported by 6 a.m. Friday as the airport operated with one runway out of service.
Crews spent Thursday checking the ground beneath the runway for additional weak spots, extending repairs longer than officials had expected ahead of the Memorial Day rush.
45 million people are expected to travel nationwide over the holiday weekend, including 39 million drivers, adding pressure as New York City gas averages $4.67 a gallon and regional road traffic is set to spike.
