Red Sox Move Marcelo Mayer to Shortstop After Trevor Story Undergoes Hernia Surgery

Boston plans to give 23-year-old Marcelo Mayer his first MLB start at shortstop on Sunday after Trevor Story underwent sports hernia surgery this week.
Story’s absence opened the position, and interim manager Chad Tracy said Mayer is finishing drill work with infield instructor José David Flores while staying at second base for Friday’s game.
Mayer was a minor-league shortstop and has logged only three major league innings there; he had spent this season at second after earlier filling in at third.
The switch leaves second base to Nick Sogard, Andruw Monasterio and Isiah Kiner-Falefa as Boston tries to reshape an infield that has offered little offense—Mayer is hitting .221/.290/.313 and Story had slumped to .206/.244/.303.
With his offense already struggling, can Mayer handle the defensive pressure of replacing an All-Star at shortstop?
Is Boston's infield gamble on Marcelo Mayer a desperate fix or the start of a new long-term plan for the team?
