51 lawmakers in Slovenia’s 90-seat parliament backed Janez Jansa for a fourth term as prime minister, returning the right-wing veteran to power after his last government fell in 2022.
The vote broke a two-month post-election deadlock after former premier Robert Golob’s Freedom Movement, which won 29 seats to the SDS’s 28, failed to assemble a majority.
A coalition deal signed Thursday with four centre-right partners gives Jansa’s bloc 43 seats, with extra support from the right-wing Resnica party; he must still win parliamentary approval for his cabinet within 15 days.
Jansa, 67, said his government would focus on the economy, cutting corruption and bureaucracy, decentralisation, lower taxes for the rich, and support for private education and healthcare.
His comeback shifts the EU member back to the right and revives scrutiny of a leader whose 2020-22 term drew protests and EU concern over democratic institutions and press freedom.
