Charles Joseph Ali, a Rockville, Maryland, man accused of throwing a beer keg through Georgetown Cupcake’s window, pleaded not guilty Friday to felony destruction of property and was released pending trial.
A judge ordered Ali to stay away from the bakery; he is due back in court on June 11 after surrendering Thursday at a D.C. police station with his father and attorney.
Court documents say Ali’s father recognized him from surveillance images police released while seeking help in a string of M Street vandalism attacks.
Georgetown Cupcake reopened within hours of the Sunday night attack, though an employee who encountered the suspect around 11:30 p.m. was left badly shaken, according to co-owner Katherine Berman.
Police also suspect Ali in a separate April vandalism at a nearby business, but he has not been charged in that case.
