Two Haven Plaza residents were diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease within 11 months, triggering a city health advisory for the East Village complex and an evaluation of its water system.
DOHMH told residents to avoid showers and fill bathtubs slowly to limit exposure to water mist while tests focus first on One Haven Plaza, where both tenants lived.
One recent patient was over 65, was hospitalized in intensive care and rarely left her apartment, tenants said, raising concern she was exposed inside the building.
Wavecrest Management and Catholic Homes said they hired a Legionella water-systems consultant and will submit sampling results to the health department on its timetable.
The alert adds to broader concern over Legionnaires’ risks in New York housing, after recent outbreaks at NYCHA developments including a 2024 Brooklyn case that turned fatal.
