THQ said physical copies of Gothic 1 Remake will not boot into a playable state without downloading a roughly 5GB day-one update at launch.
The clarification came after early copies triggered an internet-connection error offline, prompting Does It Play to warn buyers the release was unplayable without a patch.
THQ said the game does not require a permanent online connection; once the launch-day download is installed, the remake will be fully playable offline.
The issue sharpens preservation concerns because launch discs depend on continued access to that patch, which may not remain available indefinitely. Gothic 1 Remake launches June 5 on PC and consoles.
