Deputy Jon Samuelson, 33, was shot three times Friday morning in Franciscan Hospital's emergency room after stopping to help a stranded motorist on State Road 2; he was airlifted to South Bend Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
Around 6:45 a.m., Samuelson took the motorist, Sharod Grafton Jr. of Chicago, to the hospital at his request, then learned he might be tied to an earlier crime; police said an altercation followed and Grafton opened fire.
Minutes later, Grafton fled into nearby woods but was arrested, and police recovered a handgun believed to have been in his possession; charges are pending as he is held in Porter County Jail.
The La Porte County Sheriff's Office called the shooting an isolated incident with no immediate public threat, while Indiana State Police lead the investigation.
Franciscan Health said the emergency department remains on ambulance bypass, walk-in patients are being accepted through the main entrance, and other hospital services remain open.
