Richard Childress Racing said Friday it will suspend use of Kyle Busch's No. 8 and field the No. 33 at Charlotte Motor Speedway and beyond.
The team tied the move to Busch's sudden death at 41, saying the stylized No. 8 had become inseparable from the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and will be reserved for his son Brexton.
Busch reportedly collapsed in a race simulator Wednesday, was hospitalized near Charlotte, and was ruled out of this weekend's Coca-Cola 600 before news of his death emerged hours later.
RCR has taken a similar step before: Dale Earnhardt's No. 3 was shelved after his 2001 Daytona 500 death and returned only in 2014, when Austin Dillon brought it back.
