Squamish RCMP said evidence uncovered during their investigation led them to believe Stewart McLean, 45, was the victim of a homicide after he was reported missing on May 18.
McLean was last seen May 15 at his Lions Bay home, and police have not said whether a body has been found.
IHIT took over the case on May 20, the same day Lions Bay Search and Rescue launched and then stood down a public search.
Investigators were seen Thursday near McLean's Brunswick Beach-area home, along train tracks and in nearby water, as police asked anyone with information to come forward.
McLean, known for roles in Virgin River and Murder in a Small Town, was remembered by neighbours as a well-liked fixture in the small Sea-to-Sky community.
