A Bakersfield judge sentenced Christopher Kaulaity to 25 years to life after his April conviction for fatally stabbing his aunt, Maria Carmen Torrez, 45, in December 2024.
Prosecutors said a dispute over a clogged toilet escalated over 24 hours, with threats that Kaulaity and his sister would have to move out before he attacked Torrez.
Court records said Kaulaity kicked open the bathroom door, pepper-sprayed Torrez, then stabbed her repeatedly in the back and neck after she passed him in the hallway and used a homophobic slur.
A jury rejected Kaulaity's insanity defense, and at Wednesday's sentencing he cursed at relatives in court after previously telling investigators the killing reminded him of carving Play-Doh figures.

Sentenced to life but eligible for parole. Should a remorseless killer who compared murder to child's play ever be freed?
