Teddy Daniels, a Purple Heart recipient wounded four times in a 2012 Taliban firefight, said Graham Platner was a “coward” for a resurfaced 2019 Reddit post saying Daniels “didn’t deserve to live.”
The deleted post, tied to Platner’s acknowledged Reddit account, mocked a helmet-cam video of Daniels’ shooting and remains accessible through the Maine Monitor’s archive of Platner’s deleted comments.
Platner, a Marine veteran and Maine Democratic Senate candidate, is facing widening backlash as other resurfaced posts drew criticism for alleged homophobic slurs, self-described communist and socialist views, and praise for Hamas tactics.
Daniels said the comments also targeted other service members, including Chris Kyle, and argued Platner’s online rhetoric shows poor judgment and makes him unfit for office.
The controversy lands as Platner, now the Democrats’ presumptive nominee after Janet Mills exited, heads toward a likely November race against Republican Sen. Susan Collins if he wins the June primary.
