OpenAI Updates Codex for Mac With Appshots and Goal Mode, Expanding Shared Plugins to Business Teams

Codex for Mac now lets users press Command-Command to attach an app window to a thread, sending both a screenshot and extracted text—including content beyond the visible screen.
OpenAI also promoted /goal from an experiment into a core mode across the app, IDE extension and CLI, letting Codex keep working toward a milestone over hours or days while users pause or steer it.
The update speeds up Codex’s in-app browser and adds advanced annotation mode plus batch comments, aiming to make review and execution more precise inside the desktop app.
Business users can now share custom plugins across teams, while enterprise customers can request early access; Codex analytics also now show active users, credits, tokens, runs, leaderboards, generated code and plugin usage.
The Mac release follows last week’s preview of Codex access on iOS through the ChatGPT app, extending OpenAI’s push to make Codex more context-aware across devices.

Appshots Launch: How OpenAI’s Codex Transforms AI Context Sharing and Productivity for macOS (May 2026)
Overview
OpenAI's Appshots, launched in May 2026, transforms how users share real-time context with AI by letting Mac users instantly attach their current application window to an OpenAI Codex thread with a simple Command-Command shortcut. This action captures both a screenshot and the underlying text, giving the AI a full understanding of the user's working environment. By removing the need for manual descriptions or copy-pasting, Appshots streamlines workflows, reduces friction, and boosts productivity. This seamless integration marks a new era for AI interactions, making it easier for developers and professionals to get accurate, context-aware assistance from AI.
