German Business Morale Rises to 84.9 in May as Iran War Energy Shock Eases

Germany’s Ifo business climate index rose to 84.9 in May from 84.5 in April, beating expectations for a decline and marking its first increase since the Iran conflict began.
Around 9,000 surveyed firms were more upbeat about both current conditions and the outlook, with manufacturing, services and trade improving while construction slipped slightly.
Analysts said heavier defence and infrastructure spending may be cushioning the blow from the Strait of Hormuz disruption, which has hit Germany’s energy-intensive manufacturers.
The reading still sits at its lowest level since late 2024, though first-quarter GDP growth was confirmed at 0.3% and consumer sentiment also improved modestly.
