Gartner’s survey of 350 executives at companies with at least $1 billion in revenue found about 80% of organizations deploying autonomous capabilities reported workforce reductions, but layoffs were not linked to stronger returns.
Helen Poitevin of Gartner said headcount cuts may free budget but do not create ROI, with better-performing companies instead investing in skills, roles and operating models that let workers direct AI systems.
The findings suggest some employers may be using AI as cover for broader cost cutting or trimming staff first and hoping gains arrive later, even as AI continues to reshape hiring and job design.
