Lukas Dhont’s competition entry “Coward” is tied for the highest Cannes Critics’ Panel average so far, posting a 3.7 after its late-night world premiere.
The film shares the lead with “Fatherland” and “Fjord,” with critics’ scores still early as Cannes competition title No. 20 of 22 enters the grid.
Set on the Belgian front in 1916, “Coward” follows soldier Pierre, who joins flamboyant Francis and fellow troops in staging a theatrical revue behind the trenches.
The result extends Dhont’s strong Cannes run: “Close” topped the same critics’ panel in 2022 with a 3.5 after winning the competition’s second-biggest prize, while “Girl” broke out in 2018.
