Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński confirmed a five-year ban on Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir after Poland accused him of humiliating detained activists, including two Polish citizens.
A video posted by Ben-Gvir triggered the move, showing him taunting kneeling detainees with their hands restrained behind their backs after Israel intercepted the Gaza-bound flotilla.
Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski summoned Israel's chargé d’affaires, demanded an apology and called for the immediate release of the Polish detainees; the foreign ministry said both Poles were expected to be deported that day.
Around 50 ships and about 430 activists were intercepted and detained, according to the Global Sumud Flotilla, which had sailed from Turkey to challenge Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza.
The episode deepens already strained Poland-Israel ties and drew unusually broad criticism, including from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said Ben-Gvir’s conduct was not in line with Israel’s values.
Beyond Poland's ban, will EU sanctions target the Israeli minister who taunted activists?
With even his own PM disapproving, will Itamar Ben-Gvir face any real consequences in Israel?
