Larry Orduna Torrez, 56, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to attempted burglary and trespass charges after deputies arrested him outside Fresno City Attorney Andrew Janz’s home.
Surveillance video showed Torrez carrying a knife, ringing the doorbell around 3:30 a.m., then moving to the backyard and jumping a fence before deputies detained him.
Fresno County authorities said Torrez is a parolee and registered sex offender; he was also booked on suspicion of threatening a public official, and a judge ordered no contact with Janz or his family.
Janz said his wife and young daughter were inside during the incident and linked Torrez to recent legal matters his office had defeated, saying the suspect appeared fixated on City Hall and public officials.
The case has sharpened local concerns about repeat offenders and political violence, especially after Janz said someone set fire to a fence at his home the following night.
