Tom Kean Jr. called Republican county chairs in New Jersey’s 7th District on Thursday, his clearest public outreach since an undisclosed illness kept him out of view since early March.
The 57-year-old congressman told the New Jersey Globe he expects a full recovery, said his condition will not affect his cognitive health, and plans to resume voting and campaigning within the next couple weeks.
Richard Hudson, who leads House Republicans’ campaign arm, said Kean told him he would be back voting in June, while local GOP chairs said Kean sounded normal and ready to rejoin the campaign.
Kean’s absence had drawn national scrutiny in a highly competitive district, where four Democrats are competing in a June 2 primary to challenge him in November and he says he still plans to seek reelection.
