A 32-question AI security survey sent earlier this month by the Office of the National Cyber Director reinforced concerns inside the administration and industry that national AI cyber guidance is being delayed.
Officials and people familiar with the office said decisions are funneled through national cyber director Cairncross and chief of staff Lara Smith, creating bottlenecks; Cairncross also does not use government email, making him harder to reach.
Industry participants said the questionnaire exposed weak understanding of AI and federal cyber policy, and a banking official said firms spent significant time explaining basic financial-sector cybersecurity coordination during the Mythos response.
Cairncross, appointed in August after work as an RNC lawyer and on Trump’s 2024 campaign, has drawn criticism for lacking deep cyber experience, though the White House pointed to praise from Microsoft’s Brad Smith and OpenAI’s Jason Kwon.
