Somewhere Over the Rainbow won the DAE and AIDC awards at Visions du Réel’s VdR–Pitching, earning a slot to pitch the documentary in Melbourne next spring.
The project used VdR to target European broadcasters and co-producers needed to unlock French CNC funding, then spent April 20–22 moving from a 12-minute pitch to roundtables, juries and 21 one-on-one meetings.
UK and Scotland emerged as promising financing avenues after talks with Screen Scotland and regional producers, while meetings with broadcasters and sales agents sharpened the team’s funding strategy before production.
The film already carried momentum from a 2025 Whickers runner-up prize worth GBP20,000 and a French co-production deal, and the team plans to keep filming this year before taking a more advanced cut to Melbourne.
After its festival wins, can this debut documentary secure the broadcast deals needed to unlock crucial European funding?
Is the high-stakes festival circuit the best path for indie films, or does it create insurmountable barriers for new talent?
