ESA will stage a live English-language broadcast from Teruel, Spain, on August 12, 2026, and a free public observation program in León for the total solar eclipse.
The eclipse’s path of totality will cross Greenland, Iceland, Spain and a small area of northeastern Portugal, while other parts of Europe will see a partial eclipse.
Spain is central to ESA’s plans because it will have Europe’s largest area of totality, with the eclipse moving west to east across the country and over the Balearic Islands.
ESA is also distributing English- and Spanish-language school resources, adding safety guidance and supporting Spain’s official 'Trio of Eclipses' website ahead of three eclipses visible from the country between 2026 and 2028.
The event will be mainland Spain’s first total solar eclipse since 1905 and mainland Europe’s first since 2006, giving ESA a high-profile chance to showcase missions including Solar Orbiter, Smile and Proba-3.
