All northbound lanes on Atlanta’s Downtown Connector reopened just before 6:30 p.m. after flash flooding at the Baker Street overpass trapped multiple vehicles and shut the highway for about 90 minutes.
Up to 3 inches of rain fell in an hour, with 1 to 2 inches arriving in 30 minutes; officials said debris-clogged storm drains, worsened by weeks of dry weather, left water with nowhere to go.
Four vehicles were confirmed stranded near West Peachtree Street, but Atlanta Fire Rescue said all occupants had exited safely before crews arrived; no injuries were reported.
A Waymo autonomous vehicle also entered floodwater while unoccupied, was later removed, and the company paused Atlanta service until the storms passed.
The National Weather Service canceled Atlanta’s flash flood warning at 8:15 p.m., but another weather system is expected Thursday and could disrupt the afternoon commute again.
