Maria Zakharova said Russia would give Cuba “active support” and “full solidarity,” casting Washington’s latest moves as interference in a sovereign state’s affairs.
The pledge came as the Trump administration intensified pressure on Havana with early-May sanctions on more than a dozen Cuban entities and officials, followed a day earlier by U.S. charges against 94-year-old former leader Raúl Castro.
Moscow said the U.S. campaign relies on restrictive measures, threats and blackmail aimed at weakening the Cuban government.
Russia’s promise may be more political than material: with the Ukraine war draining resources, the Kremlin has recently offered little meaningful help to partners such as Venezuela and Iran during U.S. military operations.
The exchange underscores how a sharper U.S. push on Cuba could widen great-power rivalry only 90 miles from the U.S. coast.
