Virginia’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said Sam Houston State defensive back William Davis died from a gunshot wound to the chest, with the manner of death still pending.
Coach Phil Longo confirmed the 22-year-old’s death Sunday, calling Davis a beloved member of the Bearkats football family.
Davis had transferred to Sam Houston State after one season at West Virginia, where he played one game following 19 games at Virginia Union.
The Virginia native had earned a master’s degree in sports management from West Virginia in 2025 and was preparing to compete for a roster spot at Sam Houston State.
