Ubisoft Declares 2 Black Flag Games Canon, Changes Resynced Ending Before July 9 Launch

Ubisoft said both 2013’s Assassin’s Creed Black Flag and the July 9 remake Black Flag Resynced are canon, framing the new game as a more accurate Animus version of Edward Kenway’s story.
Developers Richard Knight and Paul Fu said the original game’s events still happened, while Resynced adds material that also canonically happened to Edward rather than replacing the old timeline.
Modern-day segments from the original have been removed in Resynced, forcing Ubisoft to rework the ending even though the Sage storyline remains canon.
A new scene—written with longtime series writer Darby McDevitt—was added to bridge that gap from Edward’s perspective and preserve key links to the original finale.
The approach tests whether Ubisoft can satisfy longtime lore-focused fans while making the remake’s revised structure work for newcomers on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
