Eighteen randomized trials reviewed in Cardiology Clinics found the most consistent short-term cardiovascular gains came when positive psychology exercises were delivered daily over 8 to 12 weeks.
Those programs—using gratitude, mindfulness, optimism training and journaling—were tested in studies with 50 to 200 participants through weekly sessions plus at-home activities.
Participants in some positivity programs lowered blood pressure by about 7 to 8 points and added roughly 1,800 steps a day, suggesting the benefits extended beyond mood to health behavior.
Soonhyung Kwon said the analysis helps fill a research gap on dosing and frequency, as cardiovascular research has more often centered on stress, anxiety and depression.
The findings also support Kwon's broader push to deliver such interventions digitally, including future wearable, mobile and AR-based programs for older adults with limited healthcare access.
