LeBron James said San Antonio has been “lucky” to turn three No. 1 draft picks into David Robinson, Tim Duncan and Victor Wembanyama, calling all three generational talents with elite basketball IQ.
Wembanyama has backed that praise in the Western Conference finals, where the 22-year-old opened with 41 points and 24 rebounds in a Game 1 win over Oklahoma City.
That debut put him alongside Wilt Chamberlain as the only players with 40-plus points and 20-plus rebounds in a conference finals debut, and alongside Robinson as the only Spurs to post that line in any playoff game.
San Antonio dropped Game 2 despite Wembanyama’s 21 points, 17 rebounds, six assists and four blocks, leaving the series tied 1-1 heading into Friday’s Game 3 in Texas.
Robinson won two titles and Duncan five with the Spurs, and San Antonio is now trying to turn its latest No. 1 pick into another championship era.
