Dr. Nandini Shankara Narayana Warns Iodine, Selenium and Zinc Shape Thyroid Function

Diet can meaningfully help or hinder thyroid function and even affect how well thyroid medicines work, Dr. Nandini Shankara Narayana said, warning against online food myths that drive restrictive eating.
Iodine is the key nutrient because the gland needs it to make T4 and T3 hormones; deficiency can trigger goitre, developmental problems and hormonal imbalance, according to WHO.
Iodised salt, dairy, eggs and seafood are major iodine sources, but cutting dairy, following restrictive diets or switching to gourmet salts without iodine can leave people short.
Selenium helps activate thyroid hormones and protect the gland from oxidative stress, while zinc supports hormone production and conversion; Brazil nuts, eggs, fish, whole grains, lentils, chickpeas, tofu and seeds can help maintain levels.
The warning underscores that thyroid symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, hair fall, anxiety and brain fog may be worsened by nutritional gaps even though diet alone does not cause or cure thyroid disease.
