Runway 4/22 remained closed at 6 a.m. Thursday after a sinkhole discovered around 11 a.m. Wednesday forced LaGuardia to shut one of its two runways.
Emergency construction and engineering crews worked overnight, but departing flights were still being routed to the airport's second runway until noon, with delays and cancellations already appearing.
The FAA said it was slowing flights into LaGuardia because of both weather and the sinkhole, adding pressure at an airport known for tight scheduling and constant traffic.
