May 17 brought Kami Rita Sherpa’s 32nd ascent of Mount Everest, extending his own record for the most summits by any climber.
At 56, the Seven Summit Treks guide said he keeps returning largely because foreign clients ask him to lead climbs and he sees the work as supporting Nepal’s tourism economy.
Kami Rita said Everest has changed dramatically since his first summit in 1994, with almost 500 climbers on the mountain this season versus about 70 foreign climbers in base camp in earlier years.
He urged Nepal to cap permits, raise royalties and fund cleanup, arguing the government prioritizes volume over “quality tourism” on a mountain he describes as sacred.
Looking ahead, he warned Everest may face a shortage of Sherpa load carriers within a decade as younger workers seek safer jobs abroad, leaving helicopters and drones to fill part of the gap.
