Days before trial, Camille Kiefel reached a confidential settlement in her malpractice case against two Oregon therapists and their employers over referrals that led to her 2020 double mastectomy.
Kiefel, 36, alleged the providers approved surgery after two telehealth sessions of about an hour or less despite trauma, depression, suicidal ideation and ADHD, and said she was not given true informed consent.
She detransitioned less than two years later, saying the surgery did not resolve her distress and left lasting physical complications, including vertigo, tinnitus and Raynaud's syndrome, along with emotional harm.
The 2022 complaint sought $3.5 million and included malpractice, fraud and emotional-distress claims; Brave Space has since closed, and the other defendants did not comment.
Kiefel is among at least 30 detransitioners who have sued providers in four years, and she said litigation may be the main force pushing change in gender medicine.
