China said it will take countermeasures if the European Union moves ahead with tougher new restrictions on Chinese imports, escalating a trade dispute between the two sides.
Commerce Ministry spokesman He Yadong tied the warning directly to the EU’s overcapacity concerns, arguing that a trade surplus alone cannot justify labeling China’s industries as excessive.
He challenged the EU’s logic by asking whether Europe would then be deemed to have overcapacity in cars, pharmaceuticals, wine and cosmetics.
