Dada Morero is set to deliver his final State of the City Address on Wednesday, with Johannesburg’s ANC and DA publicly staking out rival demands before the speech.
ANC leaders want the address to accelerate work on water, electricity and roads, while tying inner-city rejuvenation and safer-city programmes to economic recovery and financial sustainability.
DA caucus leader Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku said the city must explain how it will fund major infrastructure projects, citing financial instability, governance failures and weak accountability.
The DA also attacked Morero’s CBD by-law enforcement drive as selective and election-timed, saying it pulls law-enforcement resources from other regions.
The speech, to be delivered for the first time at St Mary’s Cathedral ahead of local government elections, is expected to set out Johannesburg’s priorities on infrastructure, governance and economic recovery.
